Trip to Hospitalfield

The visit to Hospitalfield was informative and inspiring. Our trip formed the basis for the beginning of a new project - the mediator project.

The Mediator Project was about our reaction to the site and translating our ideas into an art form so as to communicate our feelings to a third party.

The main ideas we took from the site revolved around nature. The intricate details from around the site conveyed the beauty of the place.

It was from this idea of miniscule ecosystems forming an overall place that we investigated the idea of micro-cosmos.

The other aspect of nature we investigated was the seasonal change and how this affects the mood and your reacion to t he site. The freeze/thaw concept was the main idea fuelling our film piece. The main element that hit me on being in the environment for some time was the bitter, unwelcoming cold. The frost not only affected the person on site, but also changed the aesthetic of the area. For example, there was a bluish tinge to the grounds with a coating of ice and less life - no green on the trees or animals around. This created a real feeling of stillness and austerity with a dense atmosphere.
The space, however, wasn't uncomfortable to be in, as we were enclosed in a wall of listed trees, in the presence of a building riddled with so much history. Beyond the site there is a lot of open space and views to the Tay which I found to be quite liberating and so could imagine that everybody would have a very different reaction to the place in summertime.
